The  weekly email from First Congregational United Church of Christ of Mankato.

Week of 07/27/2010, Vol. 6, #30

IN THE PASTOR’S OWN WORDS:

Some things that I think are important for us to know about the school for Native Americans in Chamberlain:  St Joe’s [an accredited school] supplies everything for each of the approximately 200 children from socks, bedding, food, school supplies, play/sports equipment, outerwear and boots to their text books and a home with lots of love and TLC.  The children are in all grades through high school.  There are 8 counselors for the school vs. our usual 1/200 and they see the children at least every week.  The current president of the school is very involved in the everyday lives of the children which the children love.

I had said that I would be sharing some things that we might be able to do, to help the school, so I’d like to share some of them now, even though I do not meet with the Mission Ministry Team until next week.  These are things that we could begin doing easily as individuals coming together.  What will be needed will be several folks who would be willing to be collection coordinators for a particular item [that’s singular, folks].  They would figure out how best to actually collect them, when, and how.  I will be glad to help you get this started if you’d like, or leave you be if that’s your preference.

Things we could begin getting together: Campbell soup labels and General Mills box tops—I was surprised how much this helps the school; winter jackets and boots; cute or usual twin bed blankets [fleece or quilted or ???] bought or made and/or stuffed animals—each child is welcomed with a blanket and stuffed animal that is just theirs each fall.

They actually have a ‘store’ on site, where the various items a child needs can be selected.  I’m sure we could later become involved in helping to supply items for that, as well, but let’s look at beginning with the above listed items and need for coordinators of them.  Please let me know if you’d like to help coordinate one aspect of the list.

There will also be ways for some of us to become involved directly at the school and those are being figured out as we read this e-news.  The mission of the school is incredible and fits, I think, with ours and I’m excited to see just how God sees us fulfilling our part in it.

My appreciation to Jim and Lana Karstens for their help and for Jim’s ‘opening the door’ for us there.  Jim, as you may not know, was an administrator there for 16 years and Lana taught music there for a while.  They can share lots of information with you, as well.

Stay tuned for more of my visit and what we might be able to do to help.  And, please remember that your prayers are probably the most important and needed action that we can take.  Pray for the children, the staff, the mission and for how we might best serve God in helping that mission be fulfilled.

God’s blessings,  Pastor Lynn
