What We Believe
We are a progressive Christian church, coming to life together. That means we’re in the business of coming more fully, joyfully alive. And that we’re learning to live that way together.
We’re trying our imperfect best to be a local branch of the movement Jesus launched, sharing God’s radical welcome and life-changing love.
We believe each person is on a spiritual journey and that none of ours will look exactly alike. However, we’ve found that journeying together is better than flying solo. (Although solitude is a powerful ingredient in spiritual practice). Seeking together in community with other curious, open-minded searchers is a way of growing into a fuller relationship with God that extends to all aspects of our lives. Doing it with the added help of those who’ve wrestled with God who have come before us - that’s where tradition and sacred scripture come in.
Believe it or not, a lot of progressive Christians take the Bible seriously. It’s a crucial way we not only learn about God and “spiritual stuff,” it’s a way we can actually enter into conversation with God. Like great theologians from the early church up to our own time (e.g. Origen in the third century, Augustine in the fourth and fifth centuries, Karl Barth in the twentieth century, among many others), we think the most important way God speaks in scripture is not by conveying truths of historical or scientific literalness, but by speaking to us in the midst of our joys and struggles right now. We also think that scripture is grounded in a historical context, and that God’s truth continues to be revealed in new ways. Churches in the United Church of Christ have shared the message, “God is still speaking,” which leaves room for hearing the wisdom and guidance of God in a variety of sources; through prayer, through worship, through engaging in the world in just and loving ways.
We believe that love, with justice and accountability, is at the heart of God’s message, and that we’re called to love widely and seek the fullness of life for all people. Since 1991, we have been an Open and Affirming congregation in the United Church of Christ, and welcome all persons - gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender - into the full life and leadership of the church.
We believe we are called to live out our faith, which means tending to needs locally and globally, acting on behalf of others and our environment, addressing issues of injustice and peace, and serving to advance God’s realm on earth.
We value differences among Christian traditions, and seek to be in conversation with other faith traditions. In the spirit of the United Church of Christ, we believe ‘love and unity in the midst of our diversity’ is one of our greatest assets.
